Okay, so, I came up with this idea. How novel it is I don’t know. Novel? Get it? Oh, wait, I haven’t told you my idea yet. *facepalm* Anyway, if you read my post about agonizing over the decision to either start my next novel, or jump in the ring with Nanowrimo, then this sort of falls in line with that. If you haven’t read it, click on the ~Jeopardy Theme Music~ below to do so. I will wait for you to catch up.
~Jeopardy Theme Music~
Okay, now that you are on the same page as the rest of us … Get it? Page? Novel? Alright, alright, but you didn’t have to roll your eyes so hard. My idea, which I am certain has been done before, aside from Wrimo-ers I mean, is to chronicle my daily word count here. Just brain-stormingly brilliant, right? And get this, along with the word count for that day, I will put beneath the numbers a little blurb (two, maybe three sentences) of that day’s writing. All will be ©Copyright 2014-2015, and if this baby takes that long, 2016, of course.
What is that you say? “Lame, Rob. That has been done a bazillion times before. I would rather have seen you do Wrimo and post that word count.” Yeah, okay, I feel you, but has it been done a gazillion times? No? Then let me be the first number over a bazillion toward that goal.
Alright, so it’s not original and it’s not even noteworthy. In fact, there may even be several people who didn’t even read down this far, once they saw the revelation of my unoriginal idea. Fine. With that said, I’m doing it anyway. Hey, look, it is more than I did with my previous two novels, (Sticky Buns and Irony 2) so what the heck.
The only thing bothering me, nagging at the conscience center in the back of my head, is how honest will I be? I mean there may be a day I don’t write, or a day I do a paltry word count. Heavens forbid, there may be more than one day in a row that I don’t write. (Hey, you know us writers, a quirky, odd sort, living off the stories in our own heads) Having thought it over, doing this will be no good if I am not forthright.
I wrote in the Clubber Wrimo post that my monthly word count goal is 15,000. Watch how much that number decreases now that I have put myself under the gun. Meh, I don’t suspect this will garner a lot of interest. It’s not like I am Lawrence Block. (My favorite author) So, what am I worried about, right? Right? (Good thing you can’t see the beads of sweat forming on my forehead)
So, here’s the deal: I will write Irony 3, and as I go, post that day’s count and a blurb in this blog. I won’t promise to update every single day, but I will have every single day updated when I do. Um, in other words, I may post 3 or 4 days of stuff in one day. I am anxious to kind of see how this goes. Needless to say, I have never done anything of this sort before.
If you choose to follow what is sure to be a train wreck, I would suggest something like bookmarking the first update, as I will use one post for a good while … Oh, wait, it just hit me! I will use one post a month, so it will be easier to follow. (Told you I was a newbie at this. My unoriginal idea wasn’t even fully formed.) Okay, so, that’s it. You can bookmark each post for a month and then return to rubberneck, if you get the urge, to watch me crash and burn most days.
If bookmarking doesn’t work for you, I don’t know, because maybe you have enough things bookmarked already, then you can easily follow me on twitter (link at the top of the page) or Facebook (um, also at top of page) I will update both places as I update here. Perhaps, that is an easier way for you to get your “Robert Shroud going off the rails updates.” Because, I can almost guarantee you, this is going to be ugly.
Just go ahead and ask it already. But do it quick, please, like ripping off a band-aid. “What-if-you-don’t-finish-the-book?” I knew that was coming. Still, thanks for being quick about it. Well, if I do not complete the manuscript, or there is a major interruption which prevents me from completing it for some time, then you will have gotten that train wreck I was talking about.
And, I will have missed out on a promotional opportunity to have interested parties track the book’s progress, which may have led to sales of curiosity when done. And that would just suck, wouldn’t it? I mean, really, really suck.
However, before you can run you have to walk. Before that, you have to crawl. First, however, you must be born. I will take finishing the novel over any interest or sales this endeavor may generate.
Happy writing people.
I will post the first few days here to give you an idea. The rest will be in a new blog post for the month of November. Since this is the first draft, keep in mind that everything is subject to change or be edited.
Nov 1, 2014 – Day 1 – 555 Words
“Um, I ...” She stuttered, wanting to tell her former leader to go to hell, and that she wasn’t helping her to do anything anymore. However, the fear induced by the presence of the woman on the other end of the phone stole her words.
Nov 2 – Day 2 – 714 Words.
“You know nothing! A scared little mouse is what you were when I found you. A wet behind the ears fledgling with a broken wing. I took you in, nurtured you, taught you the ways of Diana and Artemis, the sacred ones, and you think to lash me now? You should be on your knees to me, Elizabeth. It was not the Goddess who saved you, it was me.”
Nov 3 – Day3 – 725 Words
What besieged her waking moments, and a lot of her sleeping ones, in the years following, was that the very souls she sought to preserve with her phone call were, instead, destroyed because of it.
